Academics
The goal of Stone Mountain boarding schools for boys is to strengthen students' cognitive and affective skills through a creative spirit of inquiry, allowing them to achieve academic success while assuming responsibility and control over their own behavior.
The ADHD boarding schools for boys academic program is designed to meet the learning needs of 6th through 12th graders who present with wide variations in both ability and motivation. Specific approaches are used to address learning needs presented by students who are ADHD, dyslexic, dysgraphic, NLD, Aspergers, and/or ODD. Through the use of a nationally standardized curriculum from TenSigma, students earn academic credit in all content areas, and courses are transferable to other private and public schools.
The foundation of student instruction is based on the research of Lev Vygotsky, who argued that instruction is most effective when it targets the student's "zone of proximal development." By assessing each student's ability and frustration levels, we then plan instruction that falls within the "zone" that exists between those two levels. Students at our ADHD boarding school can achieve at levels that are both challenging and meaningful.

Stone Mountain School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) and by CITA (Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation).
Lessons are highly structured and include a combination of whole group lessons and small group or individualized activities. The student/teacher ratio is typically 5:1. Quizzes and tests are given regularly, and assignments are graded and returned with specific feedback for each student. Organizational skills and note-taking are taught regularly through direct instruction within the context of the lessons being taught. Appropriate modifications are made to target a student's weaknesses. Students who read significantly below grade level utilize the Kurzweil Reader so they may learn specific content material that is commensurate with their grade level peers. In addition, individual multi-sensory language instruction is taught through the Orton-Gillingham approach.
Disruptions are dealt with quickly, with emphasis on the use of cues for self-monitoring, recognition for avoiding problems or regaining control, and positive feedback for each. Core academic courses are four hours daily, which includes a period of feedback/evaluation based on behavior and performance during each class. Electives are earned after school and are integrated into the SMS Stages System. Full completion of the SMS program is required for elective credit.
