Activities
At Stone Mountain attention deficit disorder school, students reap the benefits of being in such a beautiful rustic setting. Research has shown that children with ADHD function better if they spend part of their day outdoors in nature. The boys with ADHD who attend Stone Mountain boarding school take full advantage of their environment by participating in a variety of activities.
Hiking and Camping
Our proximity to several National Forests and the Appalachian Trail allow us to provide exciting and diverse trail schedules. Each adventure trip is scheduled around the students' academic needs and seasonal requirements. Students typically participate in an adventure trip four out of every five weekends.
Water Sports
Swimming, fishing, and canoeing are available at our lake. Each activity
is preceded by safety and skills training.
Chess
Chess instruction and local tournament participation are provided by a Lifemaster instructor.
Art
Art class is taught weekly and includes a variety of media.
Music Performance/Appreciation
This course has a performance component alternating with a Music Appreciation component. In the performance side, students are exposed to a wide range of musical instruments, ranging from drums/percussion to melodic instruments such as guitars, piano, bass, horns, etc. (based on interest/talent), as well as vocal work. Each student is expected to perform for the whole school, either individually or in small combos. Through learning how to perform, they will learn the wonder of applause, how to listen to others in a group, and broaden their minds through the joy of learning a new skill.
Drama
In the Drama class, students are given a foundation of improvisational skills that will ease the inherent fear of performing in front of people and teach them how to depend and trust each other. Improv activities are a tremendous way to learn positive group dynamics. Once a foundation is laid, the students help in putting together a short play (or series of skits) to be performed for the entire school.
